Fu Baoshi
Landscapes of the Four Seasons
Last week in my watercolour class we went to The Met to take inspiration from the masters… we visited Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, Rousseau and Cezanne (aaaah delightful…) but then went on to the Chinese wing. It was staggering, to say the least. Fu Baoshi left me in this strange, dreamlike daze… I’ve included a few of my favourite pieces and if you’re interested, the NY times wrote a great article about his exhibit.
Spring refresh
Here in NYC, Spring has well and truly come early! Apart from the obvious pro’s (gelato, open-toed shoes, fun spring florals, fetes, festivals and picnic lunches) it’s also a great excuse to make positive changes in your everyday routine. If you need a little kick-start, check out our latest monthly feature which highlights a bunch of our favourite healthy/organic/fab spots around the city.
My Manahatta
It’s so easy to get caught up in this city… in chaos, in deadlines, in parties and planning and pretty things… so when a project like this comes along, it’s that much more powerful. The Welikia Project (meaning ‘my good home’ in Lenape) aims to change the way we see New York City by transporting us back in time to 1609. Explore the interactive map for yourself – navigate block by block and learn about native animals, local topography, Lenape Indian lifestyles and all sorts of super cool stuff.
Richard III at BAM
I went to see Kevin Spacey play Richard III at BAM the other day, and it was one of the most breath taking performances I have ever seen. In fact the whole cast were just fabulous. The stage production, although minimist was incredibly striking and the music was just phenomenal. If there are any tickets left, I urge you to see it, or at least watch the video so you can see what you’re missing!
911 Memorial
It was an unusually sunny winter’s day, last wednesday when we visited the 9/11 Memorial Park. There are two fountains, both existing in the footprints of the former twin towers that cascade quietly and somberly into the ground. We felt such sadness for those whose lives have been so terribly affected by the events of 9/11, but also pride for their strength, which has been a inspiration to us all. It was both a beautiful and moving experience to stand in the middle of Manhattan and see and feel so much space around us. Afterwards we saw “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” which was such a heartfelt and touching film. We salute you New York, for your courage, support and tenacity.
Loved up
To mark the month of love, our February feature is a collection of all things Valentine-y. Check it out and be inspired (or start dropping hints to your special somebody). Also, for anybody who lives in Manhattan, start getting your butt over to City Bakery for their (drumroll please) annual Hot Chocolate Festival! Finally!! Today’s flavour is Espresso and tomorrow’s is Ginger… two of our favs mmmm
P.S Petite Alma Valentine’s Cards are still available and still super cute! Get ‘em while you can!
a cup o’ kindness
We’ve all known and loved the song, but until recently I wasn’t aware of quite how lovely the lyrics were… we popped up to The Morgan Library for some carol singing a couple of weeks ago and we were quite struck by the Auld Lang Syne exhibit. You can read the story of the song here (or visit the Library yourself). If you do happen to pop by, the Charles Dickens exhibit was also wonderful.
Happy New Year!
Nolita love
Just a few snaps from a recent day spent downtown. Check out all our favourite neighborhood spots in our new monthly feature!
Fall festivities
What an exciting time to be in the city. The weather is PERFECT, pumpkins are plentiful, scarves and mittens are coming out of storage, the leaves are changing colour and everybody is searching high and low for the perfect Halloween get-up. Fall is so fun…
DUMBO ARTS FESTIVAL
I hope the rain doesn’t hang around all weekend, because for the next three days DUMBO is going to be a hubub of artists, designers, performers, musicians, dancers, poets and circus artists, all doing what they do best. I’m especially looking forward to Immersive surfaces (tonight, Saturday and Sunday: 8pm – midnight), a video projection installation onto the Manhattan Bridge – it looks awesome!
Otherworldly
We went to the Otherworldly exhibition at the Museum of Art and Design the other day… It was a great mixture of cute little dioramas and strange dark worlds but all celebrating the innate enjoyment one gets from seeing things in miniature. I really love the MAD and find it often gets overlooked due to the plethora of fine Art Galleries New York City has to offer. It’s well worth a visit and it’s always lovely to stop off at Robert (the delicious restaurant on the 9th floor with a spectacular view of central park) afterwards.
Cookies!!
Very excited to hear that NYC pop-up Cookie Bar is now delivering their buttery, delicious wares Manhattan-wide… I’ve been a fan ever since I first saw this lovely branding and packaging design by Kyle Poff.
The perfect afternoon…

On Tuesday afternoon, we took a fabulous 2 hour cruise around Manhattan on the most lovely sail boat, followed by a wander through the Meatpacking District and down The High Line. It’s so nice to pause every now and then, soak up sun and all that surrounds you… isn’t summer grand?
Out with a bang!
A spectacular photograph of the Hudson fireworks from TheTrad.blogspot.com found via the ever awe-inspiring blog This Isn’t Happiness. Despite the fact that being English made me the target of many a joke this weekend, I enjoyed the festivities immensely!
jazz lawn party
On Saturday it was the first of this year’s Dreamland Orchestra’s Jazz age lawn Party. It was so fun to see everyone dressed up and dancing and the Saint Germain cocktails were the bees’ knees! These superb photos were taken from last years party from jwoodford35 flickr stream. If you missed the party, they have another set for August 20th & 21st – my one piece of advice would be to take your own picnic!
To Do
I love making lists! I make them on everything from train tickets to the backs of old birthday cards. So I was quite excited when my friends Alice took me along to the Morgan Library to the exhibition: Lists: To-Dos, Illustrated Inventories, Collected Thoughts, and Other Artists’ Enumerations. Amongst others, there was Adolf Konrad’s hand drawn packing inventory, Picasso’s list of artist for the Armory show, Hugo Gwellert’s list of possible propaganda slogans, and the rather interesting list, “Expenses in the Pursuit of Art” by Reginald Marsh. If you don’t happen to be anywhere near New York, you can always leaf through the catalogue.
Cocktails!
Sunshine and spirits! What a wonderful combination. Lucky for us New Yorkers, Grubstreet has put together a very comprehensive slideshow of fabulous Spring cocktails to be found around the city. Hopefully, they’re as tasty as they are pretty… we’ll let you know! Have a great weekend, all!
sur les bicyclettes

Whilst we were in Paris we rented Velib bicycles and had a marvellous time cycling through the beautiful streets, humming along to Yves Montand songs. I enjoyed it so much that I pulled out and dusted off my bike. Although I love cycling in New York, I do get a little scared of those crazy taxi drivers so I’m excited to try out www.ridethecity.com - where you can find the safest routes through nyc! And for those of you in London, I just stumbled across Bobbin Bicycles. They have a fabulous array of beautiful wheels and it’s where I found these great photographs – Ride on…
ABC Kitchen
My mother and my grandma were in town this weekend so I made sure I took them to ABC Kitchen. Not only is the restaurant beautiful, the food organic and locally sourced (where possible), every mouthful is sublime. We had such a wonderful time!
I love the Crab toast! Erin loves the salted caramel ice cream! My mom loves the char! My Grandma loves the french fries!
